Interview with Autism Mom Kelsey General

I just got done interviewing autism mom Kelsey, who is a single mom of two young boys, both diagnosed with autism. It was a great interview, and you can listen to the full interview on <a href="https://marybarbera.com/lessons-about-turning-autism-around-an-interview-with-a-mom-of-2-young-boys-with-autism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MaryBarbera.com/3</a>, which is my third podcast. <p style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL0_NcGwhzOkhrmEhlryoEROMYWPnHPMQv" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p> <div class="more-link-container"><a class="more-link" href="https://marybarbera.com/interview-autism-mom-kelsey/#more-7374">Continue reading <span class="screen-reader-text">Interview with Autism Mom Kelsey General</span></a></div>

Hyperlexia and Its Connection to Autism

In today's episode, I'm talking about kids who recognize letters and can possibly read even before they can speak. This syndrome is called hyperlexia, and I'll be discussing whether it's a sign of autism and also what to do about it. <style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }</style><div class='embed-container'><iframe src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL0_NcGwhzOkjC_Li1y3Mk9FbUIIl9-1nZ' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe></div><div class="more-link-container"><a class="more-link" href="https://marybarbera.com/hyperlexia-autism/#more-7341">Continue reading <span class="screen-reader-text">Hyperlexia and Its Connection to Autism</span></a></div>

Is Lack of Pointing a Sign of Autism?

Did you know that lack of pointing with your index finger by the age of 18 months is a red flag for possible autism? In this video blog, I'm going to show you how you can keep an eye on this early communication skill in babies and toddlers and how to work on teaching toddlers with or without a diagnosis of autism this important skill. <style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }</style><div class='embed-container'><iframe src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL0_NcGwhzOkivofOPDNeyy3eYl7O5sheY' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe></div><div class="more-link-container"><a class="more-link" href="https://marybarbera.com/lack-of-pointing-sign-of-autism/#more-7152">Continue reading <span class="screen-reader-text">Is Lack of Pointing a Sign of Autism?</span></a></div>

Preventing Autism Is It Possible?

Can autism be prevented? This is often a topic of debate. So, today I'm going to be sharing my opinion about preventing autism. <center><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL0_NcGwhzOkj7CXOew7BRQ1qGq4CY2PdT" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></center><div class="more-link-container"><a class="more-link" href="https://marybarbera.com/preventing-autism/#more-6983">Continue reading <span class="screen-reader-text">Preventing Autism Is It Possible?</span></a></div>

High Functioning Autism vs. Low Functioning Autism: Is There a Difference?

When my son Lucas was young, I thought he had high functioning autism because he was included in typical toddler preschool classes and was warm and cuddly with me. But now most would consider Lucas low functioning. After two decades in the autism world, I really don't like the terms "high functioning" and "low functioning". So today I'm going to get on my soapbox about these terms, talk about how to tell, if it matters, and what to do about high functioning versus low functioning autism. <style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }</style> <div class="embed-container"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL0_NcGwhzOkgzp_4pURIfKKJB4Leid8YZ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></div> <div class="more-link-container"><a class="more-link" href="https://marybarbera.com/high-functioning-autism-vs-low-functioning-autism/#more-6515">Continue reading <span class="screen-reader-text">High Functioning Autism vs. Low Functioning Autism: Is There a Difference?</span></a></div>

Is Autism Recovery Possible?

Did you know that up to half of children diagnosed with autism can recover if they are treated  with ABA therapy when they are very young? It was first shown that kids with autism could become indistinguishable from their peers in a classic study done by Dr. Ivar Lovaas published in 1987. That was 30...
