I’ve mentioned a former client of mine, Jenna, multiple times since I began the Turn Autism Around podcast and now I finally have the pleasure of actually having her on for an interview! As an autism mom, Jenna’s fall into the world of autism is relatable and you will likely find pieces of yourself in her story. Today we’re talking about the autism diagnosis with her son, other diagnoses and the risks associated with autism in siblings.

Jenna’s son, Cody, was only 21 months old when he was diagnosed with autism. Before the diagnosis, Jenna and her husband assumed their son had a minor form of cerebral palsy and were left in shock after the diagnosis. Even so, they recovered quickly and began early intervention services, doing everything they could to give Cody his best chance to succeed.

Like most children and adults with autism, Cody had severe problem behaviors. He would slam his head against the ground when frustrated, refuse to take baths—even the wind would trigger major tantrums. By using the methods I still teach and with ABA therapy, we were able to correct these behavioral issues.

Jenna is also the mother of two daughters, Ava and Mabel. Neither daughter has autism, although Jenna notes that her knowledge of ABA therapy certainly comes in handy when trying to understand her young daughters’ tantrums!

It’s been six years since Cody’s life-changing diagnosis, and Jenna has developed her own means of self-care. She says that finding a group of friends who understand what she goes through on a daily basis means the world to her; she also acknowledges that the support from her church has been incredibly important. She credits her husband for being able to step in when she needs a break, which usually involves taking their dog for a walk or a trip to the store. I know you’ll be encouraged by Jenna’s story!
