The BECA: An Autism Assessment for Physicians, Researchers, Parents, and Autism Professionals

  • The Barbera Early Childhood Assessment (BECA) is a free, digital tool that provides quick developmental insights in under 10 minutes. By measuring self-care, language, and behavior skills, it helps parents, physicians, researchers, and autism professionals track progress and guide intervention decisions.
  • Not all autism assessments are created equal; while traditional tests require specialists, hours of administration, and costly materials, the BECA is parent-friendly, quantifiable, and repeatable—making early detection and ongoing monitoring more accessible than ever.
  • Parents and professionals can use BECA scores pre- and post-treatment to measure the impact of medical, behavioral, or early intervention programs, creating consistency across disciplines.
  • Dr. Mary Barbera, autism mom, RN, and BCBA-D, developed the BECA after decades of clinical work and personal experience. You can take the free BECA today at marybarbera.com/assessment.

Early detection and intervention are critical when it comes to autism and developmental delays. But I quickly realized that most standardized autism assessments are lengthy, expensive, and often inaccessible to parents without professional support. That’s why I developed the Barbera Early Childhood Assessment (BECA)—a tool born from both my personal journey as an autism mom and my professional experience as an RN, BCBA-D, and PhD.

The BECA is free, digital, and easy to use. It’s designed for parents, physicians, researchers, and autism professionals who need a quick, reliable snapshot of a child’s development across language, self-care, and behavior domains.

Why a New Autism Assessment Was Needed

Traditional autism screening and developmental tests—such as the Vineland, ADOS, or VB-MAPP—have undeniable strengths but also major limitations:

  • Require trained professionals and costly materials.

  • Often take 30 minutes to several hours to administer.

  • Involve long waitlists, insurance copays, and travel to specialized centers.

  • Focus on narrow areas of development rather than the whole child.

For families and professionals, this means lost time—when early intervention matters most. Dr. Barbera’s decades of experience as a nurse, autism mom, and BCBA inspired her to create a solution that was fast, accessible, and clinically useful.

What is the BECA Autism Assessment?

The Barbera Early Childhood Assessment (BECA) is a 10-minute, digital questionnaire that parents or professionals can complete online at marybarbera.com/assessment.

It generates quantifiable scores across three critical domains:

  1. Self-Care Skills – Eating, sleeping, potty training, dressing, grooming, and other daily living tasks.

  2. Language and Learning – From nonverbal communication to conversational speech.

  3. Problem Behaviors – Tantrums, aggression, self-injury, resistance to routines, or milder behavioral concerns.

Users also receive an overall score that can be tracked pre- and post-intervention, making it an ideal outcome measure for both clinical practice and research.

With easy-to-see scores, parents and professionals can quickly see a childs strengths and weaknesses and see if interventions are working.

Who Should Use the BECA?

  • Parents: Get clarity on whether delays may be signs of autism or related conditions, and receive an easy-to-read summary you can share with professionals. You can also make a plan for home intervention

  • Physicians & Pediatricians: Incorporate the BECA into well-child visits to flag early developmental concerns quickly and give parents insight on where they should focus their interventions.

  • Researchers: Use the BECA as a pre- and post-treatment measure across biomedical and behavioral interventions to compare outcomes.

  • Autism Professionals (BCBAs, SLPs, OTs, Early Intervention Teams): Save time on intake, document progress, and use standardized scores to communicate with parents and colleagues. Since this autism assessment involves the parents report, make goals more meaningful for families.

Real-World Results

Since its launch in 2022, more than 65,000 users have completed the BECA, generating over 3 million data points. Case examples highlight its effectiveness:

  • Santiago, a two-year-old initially scoring only 20% in language, showed tremendous improvement. After one year of intervention guided by BECA data and parent training, his scores rose to 85% in language and 88% overall, eliminating the need for an autism diagnosis

These measurable outcomes make BECA not just an autism or developmental delay screening tool but also a powerful progress-monitoring system.
