Autism &/or Speech Delays

Autism can cause a lot of stress for families. In this special episode, I am speaking at a conference for couples counselors. Whether it’s a new diagnosis, you’re in disagreement about services, or problem behaviors are creating tension, I am very candid about my story and journey with my son Lucas and his autism diagnosis, and marriage counseling was a part of that journey.

Common Struggles for Parents of Children with Autism

I joke that my husband couldn’t agree on water or milk for our son, and that was just the beginning. The most important thing is that you begin to understand the best intervention and treatment plans for the signs and symptoms of autism. Common struggles may involve the lack of services in your area or fitting these new services into your existing life structure. Some parents may begin to feel weighed down by the difficulties of their child, unable to have playdates, leave the home for travel, or even get normal errands done. That’s not to forget about the new vision for the future, some parents will experience grief as the potential for their child’s future looks very different. All of these and more can take a toll on individuals and marriages.

Autism Marriage Counseling

Like children with autism, who need tons and tons of support, so may your marriage. You don’t have to deal with stress alone. Counselors can help you compromise, find agreements, and be honest with one another about the stress you may be experiencing. When you see a counselor who understands autism or other special needs, they can be a great asset for recommending care or in-home strategies that work for the whole family.

This lecture is really important. These couples counselors had the opportunity to learn about and ask questions about autism, which is a struggle many of their patients may be working through. The more everyone understands autism, the better we can work towards a common goal of safety, independence, and happiness for the whole family.
