Since the beginning of this podcast, I have interviewed a lot of professionals, and a lot of parents. This time I’m interviewing autism dad, Len Arcuri, and this episode has a little bit of everything in it. Len discusses dietary intervention for autism as well as tips on how to have a healthy mindset.
As a parent coach and a father to a son with autism, Len Arcuri is a wealth of knowledge. He and his wife found out that their firstborn son, Ry, had a severe peanut allergy when he was one year old. They went immediately to the emergency room, and after that, it seemed he was allergic to everything he ate. So Len and his wife made the decision to go on a gluten and casein free diet and decided that if Ry couldn’t eat it, then they wouldn’t eat it either. Len acknowledges that this diet is not for everyone, but what your child eats is important whether they have autism or not.
Not only is he very knowledge about dietary interventions, but as a parent coach, Len understands the importance of going into a situation with the right mindset – a “growth mindset”, as he calls it. When Ry was first diagnosed with autism, Len became determined to help his son. Along the way he learned that total his goal should simply be growth. He just wants Ry to be happy, healthy, and strong.
Along with dietary interventions and the “growth mindset”, Len also discusses how he and his wife became a team and how this journey has strengthened their relationship; the importance of consistency; and self-care.
