It’s my great pleasure to interview my friend and former BCBA mentor, Dr. Rick Kubina, today! Dr. Kubina is an accomplished Board Certified Behavior Analyst, as well as a Professor of Special Education at Penn State University. He’s also the Director of Research at CentralReach and the author of dozens of journal articles and books, including The Precision Teaching Book.

While pursuing his master’s degree in Special Education, Dr. Kubina was introduced to a 16-year-old boy with autism. Dr. Kubina used what he knew of behavior analysis to help the young man and the results impacted him in an unforgettable way. That experience started him on his journey into the world of autism; he describes what came next as “dumb luck”.

Dr. Kubina is a huge advocate of precision teaching, a measurement system for any profession that takes you from data to insight in record time. This method is incredibly valuable to students with autism as it helps people discern whether their intervention is working or not and gives actionable information. It can be a lot to comprehend all at once, but Dr. Kubina breaks the system down into its simplest form, making it easy to understand.
Really, Dr. Kubina says it best: “And that’s why most of us have gone into this field: to help people and to do it effectively and to do it efficiently.” We want to help our children, our clients, and our friends lead their happiest, safest lives. And thanks to the contributions of behavior analysts like Dr. Kubina, we’re one step closer to doing just that!
