One of the reasons I first created the Turn Autism Around podcast was because there weren’t many autism podcasts out there. I remember how scared and confused I was when Lucas first received his diagnosis, and I wanted to do as much as possible to reassure other parents going through the same thing that they have every reason to be hopeful. Today’s interviewee, autism mom Megan Carranza, started her own podcast about autism parenting for the very same reason.
Megan’s firstborn son, Logan, was diagnosed with autism when he was three years-old. In her “mom heart” Megan knew that something wasn’t quite right with Logan, but it was his preschool speech therapist that first said the word “autism” out loud. Megan admits that she knew literally nothing about autism or ABA at that time.
She says that after Logan’s diagnosis, she was much more alert to autism in her younger daughters, Liliana and Layla. Although she and her husband had some concerns about Layla when she was one year-old, both daughters are typically-developing children. Megan sometimes struggles with guilt that she doesn’t pay her daughters enough attention, but she also acknowledges that growing up beside a sibling with autism has made them more compassionate individuals, and one day they will become passionate autism advocates.
Megan has her own autism podcast called Adventures in Autism. Like myself, she created her podcast because when Logan was first diagnosed, she couldn’t find any positive parenting solutions produced by a mother; she wanted a parent’s side of the story, someone whose story she could relate to. She has uploaded new episodes weekly for over a year now, and has no plans to stop!
