After two decades of working in the autism field, I’ve found myself in a few legal disputes. I have been through two due process cases, facilitated IEPs, fair hearing processes, and just a variety of special education, legal system operations. Thanks to my experience in these kind of situations I’ve learned some lessons about legal disputes; five autism legal lessons, to be exact, which I am going to share with you in this episode.
Lesson one: whenever you are looking at any kind of problem, you need to start with an assessment. Whether that problem is behavioral or a conflict, an assessment is one-hundred percent necessary.
Lesson two: choose a negotiation style, and choose conflict resolution whenever possible. I understand you might want to go into your situation with guns blazing, but legal disputes can last a long, long time, and life is draining enough when you’re a parent to a child with autism. I speak from personal experience.
Lesson three: get training. When I went through my first due process with Lucas, I attended a two-day Wrights Law boot camp. I came away with training that was helpful not only in my own situation, but for my clients.
You’ll have to listen to the episode for lessons four and five, but I’m confident that these five lessons will be very beneficial to you no matter your legal situation.
