Dr. Megan Miller is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who is an expert on behavioral procedures in kids with autism. In today’s podcast, we discussed why we should carefully comply with consistent ethical standards in a clinical practice, how the definition of escape extinction can change, and why we should rely on evidence-based practice.

Ethical Practices

Reviewing the ethics code regularly is important to make sure you aren’t violating it yourself. Over time, it’s normal that our behavior could begin to shift into questionable behavior because humans aren’t inherently ethical. We should be training and teaching our staff about it regularly so that they can keep this standard in the front of their minds. With new clients, we need to open the conversation about patient care with them so that there’s no confusion when you can’t accept their gift or their friend invitation on Facebook.

Evidence-Based Practices

As professionals, Dr. Miller says, we should rely on evidence-based practices by using the three-pronged approach for delivering interventions. 1: look at the relevant research that exists. 2: look at the clinical expertise that a practitioner has. 3: find out what the clients’ needs and values are, especially mental health. By using these three approaches together, she feels that she is better equipped to treat the patient.

In this podcast, we discuss evidence-based medicine along with our experience with escape extinction and how that definition has changed. We both share some personal experiences – based on patient outcomes – that have shaped our approach to this theory. Dr. Miller’s The Do Better Movement podcast addresses some alternatives to escape extinction when you might need to use it, and some of its limitations.
